Last week, we asked our being808 community on Facebook for healthy breakfast options. Malanie McLellan eagerly replied, saying her family makes granola all the time because it is perfect for breakfast. The being808 team wasted no time jetting over to her house to learn more about – and hopefully sample – their tasty granola.
We first sat down with Malanie, her husband, Andrew, and their children to talk about their granola before following them into the kitchen. She explained the homemade treat is a healthier alternative to packaged, process foods. And, “It’s a good source of sustained energy.” Andrew agrees: “It’s a lighter breakfast rather than a loco moco or some five-egg omelet.”
Although the McLellan family granola is delicious by itself, 2-year-old Violet says she enjoys it with vanilla yogurt, while Andrew enjoys adding it to a smoothie. Four-year-old Jack dreams of a day when he can add bacon to the recipe. It sounds like that might be a personal batch.
The current McLellan recipe is about a year old, assembled with ingredients the entire family agreed on – sorry, Jack, no bacon. As a family, they pride themselves on using local vendors for ingredients whenever possible. In the video, Malanie walked us through the recipe, which includes:
- organic rolled oats,
- 2 cups of chopped nuts (includes macadamia and pecans),
- flax seed,
- chia seed,
- shredded coconut (unsweetened),
- toasted wheat germ,
- organic coconut oil,
- organic vanilla extract,
- organic grade B maple syrup,
- dried cherries,
- and raisins.
As we waited for the oven to yield our final product, Andrew assured us, saying “Trust me, you’re gonna love it.” He was right. The being808 office now has a quickly dwindling batch of the McLellan granola.
“When eating it, you don’t miss anything else,” Andrew adds. We agree, although some yogurt wouldn’t hurt.
Final product of today’s granola shoot. This stuff is delicious! Oh yeah, and healthy. #808strong instagr.am/p/I-Prx_BdMW/
