Ala Moana Beach Park is known for its calm waters and prime real estate for barbecues or picnics. But another park feature has its regular visitors as well. Honolulu residents of all ages are pulling up and crunching on the stationary equipment of Ala Moana Beach Park’s outdoor gym.
From a distance, the blue structures look like a jungle gym for adults. Items like the horizontal ladder bring back memories of childhood playgrounds but rest assured they offer serious health benefits. In the center of the gym stand description panels for each piece of equipment, outlining its proper use and the target workout areas on the body. Because visitors are of various fitness levels, the panels also suggest variations of each workout for beginner, intermediate or advanced users.
During our visit, an elderly couple began their regular workout. The husband, 83, joined his wife, aka “Purple Princess,” 73. In their 20 years of working out at the outdoor gym, they have seen three updates to the equipment, with the current setup being the best so far. Past installations have included equipment with chains and other less stationary pieces that were more susceptible to vandalism. After watching a few vertical climbs and leg lifts, it was apparent that these sturdy fixtures won’t be going anywhere. As with any workout, the couple adjusted routines to best fit their needs. The “Purple Princess” did a variation of a body curl while on the sit-up bench. Having the freedom to customize their free workout keeps them coming back 3-4 times a week.
Who can blame them? A beautiful beach to view between pull-ups while absorbing some vitamin D from the sun’s rays is enough for many Honolulu residents to keep jogging back to the outdoor gym.
